Preparations for a Himalayan Trek

Hi Guys..finally here comes the much awaited post 🙂 I went on my first ever Himalayan Trek this January and it was by far the most amazing vacation i ever had in the last 29 years of my life. I have always had a Himalayan trek in my bucket list but never really thought it would materialise someday but yay it happened ! So before i start talking about our actual trip, i think its very important to talk about the preparations we did for it. Because planning for a himalayan trek is way different from usual trips/ vacations. So we booked our winter trek with INDIAHIKES in the month of August and once we got our transport and accommodation sorted, we began the real preparation.

  • Get fit- Now getting fit is the most important thing before you go for a himalayan trek. Himalayan trek for sure does sound fancy, but if you want to really enjoy the trek then you ought to be fit. If you want to trek with Indiahikes then you have to get a fitness certificate from a medical practitioner so that you are allowed on the trek. Now i know a lot of people would get fake certificates by paying money, but remember if you do that then you are cheating yourself and nobody else!  My husband and i checked our weight sometime in September and we realised we are overweight and totally unfit for the trek. Our BMI was out of control and looked quite scary and unhealthy. Thats when we decided to get into shape and we both trained for it. By training i meant that we took care of our diet and ate sensibly and also hit the gym atleast 4 days a week. I used my FITBIT Charge 2 to track my runs. If you do not have a smart watch, you can use the app ENDOMONDO or anything similar.  Slowly but steadily, we could see our bodies transform in a few months time. By the time we hit December, we had shed that unhealthy fat and we looked our best! We went in confidently to a well renowed hospital here in Bangalore and confidently stood on the weiging scale for once without being ashamed of our weight. And guess what! BMI was normal. Goal Achieved 😀 And to be very honest, all this training and mindful eating really helped us enjoy the trek to the fullest. The cardio workouts really help to get more flexible and strong. Also it is very important you do some sort of breathing sessions which will help you immensely when your in high altitude .   • Get the right kind of trekking gear – The number of items you need to carry for the trek will vary depending on the type/kind of trek you are going for. A winter trek would require more layering when compared to a summer trek. INDIAHIKES will send you a detailed list of items you need to carry on your trek once you have registered for the trek. Trekking gear includes backpack, trekking shoes, clothes, accessories, toiletries and medical kit. Also if you are planning to go with IH , then i suggest you to subscribe to their Youtube Channel . You can find the link to their channel  HERE. Before we purchased our trekking essentials, we made it a point to watch the videos posted by Swati, in her show called Trek with Swati. The videos were really helpful and that helped us make our purchases better. We shopped for most things from Decathlon. You also have the option to shop online here. But i suggest you go to the shop and physically try out the items before you purchase them. The fit and comfort level are key for a good trek.

  • Be positive and Stay Connected- High Altitude treks can be a bit scary especially if you havent done one before but if you are going with IH, leave your fears behind! The team will create a whatsapp group with all the participants of the trek well in advance, so make good use of the opportunity and connect with your fellow trekkers. The group would be a melange of different kinds of people. Invest some time and connect with them regularly to get your doubts cleared if you have any. Dont go for a trek with any fears or preconceived notions because that can really spoil your whole trip. Go with an open mind and await the magic which is to unfold.
  • Invest in a good camera – A good camera/ phone with good camera is a must! Once your done with the trek, you would be taking back with you a lot of experiences , learnings, good friends and beautiful memories. Seize  each and every moment . We have a basic point and shoot Sony HX50V camera which we take with us to all our travels . In addition, i used my iphone 6s and our much loved selfie stick to get those picture perfect clicks.

  • Stay Hydrated – When you are high in the mountains,  the weather is really chill and dry so you lose moisture with every breath you take in addition to sweating because of the trek. A lot of body fluids is lost and it can result in fatigue and make the journey tiresome. So whether you are thirsty or not, develop the habit of drinking a lot of water. Make sure not to gulp litres at one go but to break down the water intake into several intervals and space it throughout the day.
